After each interview, it is important to send a follow-up, or thank-you letter. It’s a great way to keep your name in front of a prospective employer, and it’s also a good way to address any concerns that may have been raised during the initial interview.

Thank-you letters are among the most influential letters you can write during your networking and job search process. One well written and carefully timed follow-up letter can become the key to being invited for a second interview or offered the position.

Gain a Competitive Edge
Thank-you letters are not only necessary as a common courtesy, they demonstrate your thoughtfulness … a characteristic sought by many employers. Most importantly, a thank-you letter will give you an edge over other job seekers who didn’t bother to write one.

Follow up on the interview! Be sure to send a thank-you to everyone who has assisted you in your job search. This includes networking contacts, interviewers, and even those who sent you a rejection letter. Rather than get angry and end communications with the company, the job seeker who sends a follow-up letter indicating disappointment (in not being selected), but reiterating interest in the company, will be remembered in a very positive way.

Who
Send thank-you letters to everyone who assisted you in your job search, especially people with whom you interviewed and those with whom you communicated about your job search, i.e., people in your network.

What
The letter should express your appreciation for the opportunity of having an interview; or, in the case of a networking letter, gratitude for the person’s assistance. Reiterate your confidence in your ability to do the job, and express your continued interest in the position. Emphasize your strengths and how they might relate to the employer’s needs.

When
Send your letter immediately after interviewing (within 24 hours, if possible), or within a day or two after a networking contact has been made. Follow up with a phone call a few days later.

Printed Pages would be happy to provide assistance in preparing interview follow-up letters. We can write the letter for you, or "polish" one you’ve written yourself. If you prefer, we can simply word process and laserprint your letter on stationery that matches your résumé, to maintain the professional look that is so important.
